Dutch Politician and LGBT Advocate
Alexander Pechtold is a Dutch politician who has served as a Member of the Dutch Parliament (Tweede Kamer) since 1994.
Early Life and Political Career
Pechtold was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands in 1965. His father was a political emigrant from Czechoslovakia. Pechtold began his political career with the Democrats 66 (D66), a left-liberal political party. He served as the party leader from 2003 to 2006, when he resigned in protest over the party's support of the United States' invasion of Iraq.
Human Rights Advocacy
After leaving D66, Pechtold joined Human Rights Watch as the Director of Advocacy for LGBT rights. He was instrumental in the development of the Yogyakarta Principles, a set of international guidelines on the human rights of LGBT people.
Personal Life
Pechtold is openly gay and married in 2006 to long-time partner Gert-Jan Oplaat. He is a strong advocate for LGBT rights and has worked to improve the lives of LGBT people around the world.
