Early Life and Education

Alexander Yakovlevich Yakovlevwas born into a family of educators in Moscow, Russia. In 1948, he graduated from an evening school in Elektrostal and subsequently worked at a factory. In 1954, Yakovlev graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), specializing in international and state law.

Journalism Career

Yakovlev's journalism career spanned the following positions:

1954-1961: Correspondent in the German-language service of Moscow Radio

1961-1968: Special correspondent and political observer in the socialist countries department of the newspaper "Izvestiya"

1968-1969: Special correspondent in Prague, witness to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia

Academic Contributions

Doctorate and Research:

1969: Doctorate in Historical Sciences with a thesis on "Social and Political Roots of West German Neo-Nazism"

1980: Doctorate in Historical Sciences with a thesis on "Theoretical and Programmatic Development of the SPD after World War II (1945-75)"
