Bowe Bergdahl: A Captive of the Taliban
Early Life and Military ServiceBorn in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 1986, Bowe Robert Bergdahl enlisted in the United States Army in 2006. He became a sergeant and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008.
Capture and Taliban Video
On June 30, 2009, Bergdahl disappeared from his base in Paktika Province. In July, the Taliban released a video of Bergdahl appealing to the U.S. government to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. The video raised concerns about his health and well-being.
Taliban Negotiations and Video Appearances
The Taliban offered to exchange Bergdahl for five detainees at Guantanamo Bay, but the U.S. declined. Subsequently, the Taliban released several more videos of Bergdahl, including one in which he pleaded for the release of Afghan prisoners.
Negotiations and Escape Attempt
Negotiations for Bergdahl's release have stalled. It was reported that he attempted to escape in the fall of 2011, but was recaptured within three days.
Current Status
As of today, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl remains the only American military captive in Taliban custody since June 2009. His whereabouts and condition are unknown.
