Early Life and Education

Brandon Maxwell, an American fashion designer, television personality, director, and photographer, was born in Longview, Texas. His grandmother worked at a boutique in his hometown, where Maxwell spent his childhood immersed in the world of fashion. In 2002, he relocated to New York City to pursue painting at Marymount Manhattan College, later transferring to St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. Maxwell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Photo Communications.

Early Career as a Stylist

Upon graduating, Maxwell returned to New York City to pursue a career in the fashion industry. He started as a stylist, assisting Deborah Afshani in 2009 and Nicola Formichetti in 2010, where he was introduced to Lady Gaga, who Formichetti styled at the time. In 2012, Maxwell became Lady Gaga's personal stylist and designer.

Collaboration and Recognition

Maxwell's work as a stylist and creative director has graced the pages of magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, ELLE, V Magazine, Teen Vogue, and Porter. He has also directed advertising campaigns for Barneys New York and Uniqlo. In 2015, The Hollywood Reporter named him one of the "Top 25 Stylists of 2015." Maxwell has collaborated with photographers including Mario Testino, Inez and Vinoodh, Paola Kudacki, Giampaolo Sgura, Terry Richardson, and Steven Klein.

Launch of Brandon Maxwell

In 2015, Maxwell unveiled his namesake women's clothing brand, Brandon Maxwell, at the Mr. Chow restaurant in New York City. Emphasizing craftsmanship, the entire collection is designed in New York City. Brandon's approach involves draping instead of sketching to ensure an ideal fit. Inspiration is drawn from the women in Brandon's life, reflected in tailored silhouettes and sculptural details.

Filmmaking Debut and Advertising Campaigns

Along with his friend Jesse Price, Brandon photographed and directed their first commercial short film for Brandon Maxwell's Fall/Winter 2016 campaign. The success of this project led them to direct the music video for Lady Gaga's song "A-Yo" from her 2016 album Joanne. They continued to direct campaigns for Brandon's namesake label, which focus on showcasing the designer's talent.

Critical Acclaim and Industry Recognition

Maxwell gained significant media attention during New York Fashion Week, where his collections were featured alongside Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford. His designs are worn by influential women including Michelle Obama, Karlie Kloss, Jennifer Lawrence, Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman, Jane Fonda, Viola Davis, and the Queen of Jordan. The collection is sold in retail stores worldwide, including Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Moda Operandi, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, and Neiman Marcus. Maxwell has been honored with the 2018 Woolmark New York Semi-Finalist Award for Womenswear, the 2016 CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear, and was a finalist for the 2016 LVMH Prize.
