Brandy Rayana Norwood, commonly known as Brandy, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, television host, and film producer. She was born on February 11, 1979, in McComb, Mississippi, and grew up in Carson, California. Brandy comes from a musical family, with her father being a church choir director and former R&B singer Willie Norwood, and her mother, Sonja Bates-Norwood, having worked as a district manager for the tax preparation company "H&R Block." Her younger brother, William Raymond "Ray-J" Norwood Jr., also became an actor and R&B singer. Brandy is also a cousin of blues musician Bo Diddley and renowned rapper Snoop Dogg.
Early Life and Music Career
Brandy began singing at a young age, thanks to her father's influence. She started performing at the age of two at the Brookhaven Church of Christ. When she was four years old, her family moved to California to focus on the future careers of their children. At the age of six, Brandy had her first stage experience, performing with Bo Diddley and Little Richard. From that moment on, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in music. By the age of eleven, she was already singing in a children's group.
In 1993, Brandy made her acting debut with a supporting role on the ABC comedy series "Thea." She then gained success with her role in the 1996 comedy series "Moesha." She also appeared in the 1998 horror film "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" and starred in two successful television movies, "Cinderella" and "Double Platinum," both produced by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
In 1993, Brandy signed a contract with the record label "Atlantic," and a year later, she released her debut album. Following that, she collaborated with singer Monica on the hit song "The Boy is Mine," which earned her a Grammy Award. In 1998, she released her second album, "Never Say Never," which solidified her reputation as one of the most fashionable R&B singers of the mid-1990s. In 2005, Brandy joined the record label "Epic," and in 2008, she released her album "Human."
According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Brandy is one of the best-selling artists in American music history. She has sold over eight and a half million albums in the United States alone, and her worldwide sales exceed twenty-five million. Additionally, Brandy has received over a hundred music awards throughout her career.
