Survivor of Grizzly Bear Attack in Canada

Brent Case, a Canadian known for cheating death, miraculously survived a terrifying encounter with a grizzly bear. In May 2008, Brent Case came face to face with a ferocious grizzly bear in the woods near Bella Coola Valley, British Columbia, Canada, 700 kilometers away from Vancouver. Overwhelmed with fear, Brent decided to play dead by falling to the ground. The grizzly approached him, sniffed him, and lightly scratched his head. Remaining motionless, Case realized that the bear intended to start with his head and began biting his scalp. "The pain was excruciating, beyond anything I could have imagined. How did I manage not to scream? I simply told myself to play dead, no matter what happens," Brent later recounted. He continued to lie still, curled up in the fetal position, while the grizzly moved on to his right arm, leaving him with monstrous wounds. Despite the unbearable pain, Case persisted in "playing dead". He thought, "He is going to eat my brain," yet he remained motionless. Indeed, there was no way for him to escape from an adult grizzly bear.

A Miraculous Escape

Coming to terms with his impending doom, Brent began praying to God for a quick end. Simultaneously, he also thought that it was too early for him, a 53-year-old, to die. Perhaps God heard him, or maybe Brent simply got lucky, but the grizzly suddenly stopped and, grunting and snorting, swatted Brent with its paw into the mud before leisurely retreating into the woods to attend to its bear business.

Keeping an eye on the bear, Brent cautiously made his way back to his truck. His hands were so swollen that he struggled to retrieve the keys from his pocket. Then came the agonizing 25-kilometer journey to the nearest town, where Brent could seek help. Eventually, he reached a gas station and, weakened, asked for an ambulance to be called.

Later, Case admitted that he was convinced his brains were hanging out at the back of his head. However, at the same time, he was acutely aware that he was still alive. To assure himself of his survival, he constantly tried to move his fingers and toes. He even asked the doctor, "What's hanging there?", referring to his head. The doctor reassured him, saying, "You're okay."

Several surgeries followed, including a reconstructive operation, and today, Brent is truly in good health. As for the grizzly bear, local hunters tracked it down in the woods and shot it.

Miracle and Resilience

Brent Case's story is unique; a similar encounter would almost certainly have ended less optimistically. However, luck, as well as his indomitable spirit, helped him survive. Brent Case is one of the very few lucky individuals who have lived to tell the tale after coming face to face with the claws and teeth of an adult grizzly bear.
