Brent Hinds: A Metal Master of Multiple Projects
Brent Hinds is an acclaimed guitarist and vocalist, best known as a member of the Grammy-winning metal band Mastodon.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born in Pelham, Alabama, Hinds first picked up a guitar at age 13. Encouraged by his father, he initially learned banjo and took music lessons at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.
Formative Years in Atlanta
Hinds relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he met Troy Sanders, his future bandmate in Mastodon. Together with Sanders, he formed the band Four Hour Fogger.
Genesis of Mastodon
After the demise of Four Hour Fogger, Hinds and Sanders crossed paths with Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher at a local concert. This quartet, joined by vocalist Eric Saner, laid the foundation for Mastodon.
Mastodon's Rise to Fame
Mastodon gained commercial success after Saner's departure, which prompted Hinds to share vocal duties with Sanders. Hinds dedicated himself to Mastodon, touring extensively and working on albums.
Parallel Projects
Despite his focus on Mastodon, Hinds maintains lesser-known projects such as Fiend Without A Face (rockabilly) and The Blood Vessels (classic rock). He also produced the soundtrack for the film "Jonah Hex."
Signature Guitar Style
Hinds' preferred guitar is the Gibson Flying V, particularly the Silverburst model. He also uses a variety of Gibson guitars and a Michael Kelly Phoenix. His guitar techniques include fast picking, influenced by his banjo background, and intricate use of harmonics, slides, and pull-offs.
Musical Influences
Hinds' musical style is influenced by country music, Neurosis, Melvins, prog rock, and psychedelic rock from the 1970s. His playing combines minor pentatonic, natural minor, and minor harmony.
Awards and Recognition
In 2007, Hinds and Kelliher received the Metal Hammer Award for Best Shredders, marking the first time Mastodon guitarists had been recognized for their technical prowess.
Vocal Style
Hinds' vocals resemble an extreme version of Ozzy Osbourne's voice. He performs both clean vocals and growls, sharing vocal duties with Troy Sanders.
