Biography of Brenton Thwaites

Australian actor Brenton Thwaites gained fame relatively recently. It all started with one of the key roles in the horror film 'Oculus' (2013), after which Thwaites appeared in the fantasy film 'Maleficent' (2014), the not-so-successful sci-fi epic 'Gods of Egypt' (2016), and the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' (2017) - the fifth installment of the famous franchise with Johnny Depp in the lead role. Thwaites' filmography consists of a few projects, but in 2018, his name will surely be on everyone's lips: the TV series 'Titans' will premiere on TNT - an action-packed show based on DC comics, in which Thwaites is given the lead role of Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing.

Early Life and Education

Brenton Thwaites was born on August 10, 1989, in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, to Peter and Fiona Thwaites. He completed his secondary education at Cairns State High School, graduating in 2006. In his youth, Thwaites seriously considered becoming a firefighter or police officer to resemble the action heroes he admired. However, his passion for cinema and acting proved to be stronger, and at the age of 16, he made his acting debut in a live performance of 'Romeo and Juliet'.

In 2010, Thwaites graduated from Queensland University of Technology, where he studied acting, and in the same year, he made his film debut in 'Charge Over You'. In 2011, Thwaites added four projects to his filmography: the short film 'Headsmen', as well as the TV series 'Sea Patrol' (1 episode), 'Slide' (10 episodes), and 'Home and Away' (2011-2012, 57 episodes). In the soap opera 'Home and Away', he played one of the main roles, but this work did not bring the young actor the desired fame.

Rise to Fame

In 2012, Thwaites appeared in the TV movie 'Blue Lagoon' and the comedy film 'Save Your Legs!'. 'Blue Lagoon' was his debut work in Hollywood, but it was another American project - the horror film 'Oculus' - that brought him significant recognition. After the release of this film, it became clear that a new talent had emerged in Hollywood, with the potential to become a star.

In 2014, Thwaites could be seen in five feature films - 'Son of a Gun', 'The Signal', 'Maleficent', 'The Giver', and 'Ride'. The films 'The Giver' and 'Maleficent' gained the most recognition. In 'The Giver', Thwaites was joined by the acclaimed actors Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep, while 'Maleficent' starred Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie. However, 'The Giver' did not meet expectations, and although 'Maleficent' received positive reviews from audiences and critics, Thwaites did not receive much attention, as all the praise was directed towards the film's main stars - Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning.

In 2015, Thwaites added the film 'Ruben Guthrie' to his list of projects, but it failed to impress the public. One of the most notable premieres of 2016 was supposed to be the film 'Gods of Egypt' by Alex Proyas, in which the main roles were entrusted to rising star Brenton Thwaites, renowned actor Gerard Butler, and 'Game of Thrones' star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. However, the efforts of the aforementioned trio were in vain: the film flopped at the box office and received five nominations for the 'Golden Raspberry' awards. Despite this setback, Thwaites was cast in one of the key roles in the high-profile project 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' shortly after the failure of 'Gods of Egypt'. Initially, the character's name was kept secret, but perceptive viewers quickly realized that Thwaites would play the son of Will Turner - the character portrayed by Orlando Bloom, who became the immortal captain of the Flying Dutchman at the end of the third film, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'. The speculations were confirmed, but the expectations for the film were not met.

Recent and Future Projects

Thwaites' career is filled with unremarkable films, but this does not deter the Australian actor - his shooting schedule is planned for the next couple of years. In the near future, the detective drama 'An Interview with God' is set to be released, and in 2018, Thwaites will be seen in at least three projects - the comedy horror film 'Office Uprising', in which he not only played the lead role but also made his debut as an executive producer, the war thriller 'Ghosts of War', and the superhero TV series 'Titans'. The latter project has attracted the most attention among all the aforementioned ones. It is currently unknown how Thwaites will portray Dick Grayson in the series. In the comics, Dick Grayson was Robin - Batman's right-hand man and a well-known protector of Gotham City. Growing up, Dick realized he could go solo, so he adopted the moniker 'Nightwing' and started patrolling the law in the city of Blüdhaven, both as a police detective and as the masked hero Nightwing. Perhaps the character's story will undergo changes in the TV series. The exact release date of 'Titans' is currently unknown.

Personal Life

In 2014, Brenton Thwaites received three awards - 'New Talent' at the Australians in Film Breakthrough Award for the film 'The Giver', 'Rising Star' at the Hawaii International Film Festival, and 'Breakthrough of the Year' at the GQ Men of the Year Awards. Since 2015, Thwaites has been in a relationship with Chloe Pacey, whom he met during the filming of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'. In March 2016, Chloe gave birth to their daughter, Birdie Thwaites.
