Brian Gilbertson Biography

Brian Gilbertson, born on August 15, 1943, in South Africa, is a renowned figure in the global metallurgical industry and the President of SUAL, a metallurgical holding company.

Education and Early Career

Gilbertson completed his Master's degree in Physics from Rhodes University and later obtained a Master's degree in Business Management from the University of South Africa. He initially worked on rocket systems at the National Institute for Defense Research.

In 1975, Gilbertson joined Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Ltd (JCI) and Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited (RPM). He then moved to Gencor Limited in 1988, where he served as the Chief Executive Officer and later became the Executive Chairman in 1992. In July 1997, Gencor transferred its assets to Billiton Plc, and Gilbertson assumed the role of Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. According to other sources, he became the Executive Director of Billiton in 1998. Following the merger of Billiton and Australian company BHP Ltd, Gilbertson became the President of BHP Billiton in July 2002 (according to some sources, in 2001).

Leadership Roles

From the second half of 2003 to July 2004, Gilbertson served as the head of the Indian group of companies, Vedanta Resources Plc. He also acted as an advisor to the Board of Directors of Lonmin Plc. In July 2004, Gilbertson assumed the position of President at SUAL, a holding company co-owned by Victor Vekselberg. Reports from the press indicated that Vedanta's management had received information about Gilbertson's involvement with SUAL, which prompted an investigation.

In August-September 2006, there were reports in the media about the impending merger between SUAL and Oleg Deripaska's "Rusal."
