Early Life and Travels
Bryan Jacques was born on June 15, 1939, in Liverpool, England. He left school at the age of 15 and embarked on a life of adventure, joining the merchant navy as a deckhand. His voyages took him to far-flung destinations such as New York, Valparaiso, San Francisco, and Yokohama.
Diverse Occupations
After returning to Liverpool, Jacques held a wide range of odd jobs, including sailor, postman, policeman, dockworker, clown, and truck driver. He also briefly pursued a career as a boxer.
Music and Literature
In the 1960s, Jacques joined forces with his brothers and friends to form the folk group "The Liverpool Fishermen." His literary career began in the theater, where he wrote plays.
The Birth of Redwall
Jacques's first children's book, "Redwall," was written for visually impaired students at a Liverpool school. When a teacher shared the manuscript with publishers, Jacques landed a five-book contract for the "Redwall" series.
Redwall's Success
The "Redwall" series became a global phenomenon, with millions of copies sold and an animated television adaptation produced in 1999. Jacques's evocative world-building and engaging characters captivated readers of all ages.
Radio and Legacy
Jacques hosted the popular radio show "Jakestown" on BBC Radio until October 2006. He passed away on February 5, 2011, at the age of 71. His legacy lives on through his beloved "Redwall" series and his passion for storytelling.
Additional Work
In addition to the "Redwall" series, Jacques also wrote a mystery-adventure series starring a young boy named Ben and his dog, who escaped from the "Flying Dutchman."
