Brigitthe Bierlein: Austrian Chancellor and Constitutional Court President
Early Life and Education
Brigitthe Bierlein was born in Vienna, Austria in 1949. She completed her early education there, graduating from the III Vienna Federal Gymnasium. Subsequently, she pursued a legal degree at the University of Vienna, obtaining her Doctorate in Law in 1971.
Legal Career
Bierlein embarked on a distinguished legal career in the Austrian judiciary. She served as a General Advocate in the public prosecutor's office and eventually became the General Prosecutor for Austria from 1990 to 2002. Additionally, she held a position on the Executive Board of the International Association of Prosecutors from 2001 to 2003.
Constitutional Court Judge
In 2003, Bierlein was appointed to the Austrian Constitutional Court, becoming the first woman to hold this prestigious position. In January 2018, she was elected as the Court's President, making history as the first female to lead the institution.
Interim Chancellor
Following the resignation of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz amidst the Ibiza-gate scandal in May 2019, Bierlein was tasked with forming and heading an interim government until the next national elections in September 2019. On June 3, she was sworn in as Chancellor, becoming the first woman to hold the position in Austria and the first independent candidate since the 1920s.
Return of Kurz
Bierlein served as Interim Chancellor until January 7, 2020, when Kurz resumed his role as Federal Chancellor of Austria.
