Roots and BeginningsIn the mid-2000s, David Gallegos began experimenting with hip-hop tracks in his home studio, releasing them online. By 2006, he had teamed up with Michael Shea to form Brokencyde, a name derived from the erratic nature of their music.
Initial Releases and Crunkcore Emergence
Despite the lack of professional studio access, the duo released their debut album, "The Broken!" in 2007. This early release featured themes of heartbreak and despair. Their unique blend of crunk beats, rap, clean vocals, and screams gave birth to the genre known as crunkcore.
Expanding the Lineup and Breakthrough
In 2008, Julian McClellan joined as a composer and vocalist, followed by Anthony Trujillo. With this expanded lineup, they released the mixtape "THA $C3N3 MiXTaPe," featuring a diverse range of tracks that would later be repurposed for their official debut album.
Record Label and Commercial Success
After signing with Suburban Noize, Brokencyde released their EP "BC13" and singles like "Freaxxx" in 2008. Their first full-length album, "I'm Not a Fan, But the Kids Like It!" dropped in 2009 and debuted at number 86 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Subsequent Releases and Touring
Over the next few years, Brokencyde released their second album, "Will Never Die," and the mixtape "Brokencyde Vol. 1." In 2011, their third album, "Guilty Pleasure," showcased an evolution in their sound, with a heavier focus on traditional hip-hop.
Membership Changes and Future Plans
In 2012, Phat J left the group to pursue a solo career, prompting a re-recording of "Guilty Pleasure" as "Guilty PleasureZ." The following year, Antz also departed, leaving the lineup reduced to its original duo. After releasing singles and touring, they dropped their fourth album, "All Grown Up," in 2014.
