Early Life and Education
Bruce Arena was born in Brooklyn, New York, but grew up on Long Island, New York, where he attended Carle Place High School. Although he was talented in several sports, he was too small for American football, so he joined the school's soccer team as a defender. Later, he became the goalkeeper when the starting goalie was injured by a player from another school during a game. While in high school, he also played one season for a local club, "Hota" of the New York Cosmopolitan Soccer League.
Collegiate and Early Professional Career
After graduating high school, Arena attended Hofstra University, where he played soccer for the Pride from 1971 to 1974. He served as the team's captain for three of those years and helped lead the Pride to the NCAA Tournament three times.
In 1974, Arena was drafted by the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL) but chose instead to play for the Rochester Lancers of the American Soccer League (ASL). He spent four seasons with the Lancers, winning the ASL championship in 1977. In 1978, he joined the New York Cosmos and remained with the team until 1979.
Coaching Career
University of Virginia (1979-1995)In 1979, Arena began his coaching career at the University of Virginia. Over the next 18 years, he led the Cavaliers to unprecedented success, winning five national championships in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994. He also guided the team to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three consecutive titles from 1991 to 1993. During his tenure, the Cavaliers compiled a remarkable record of 295 wins, 58 draws, and 32 losses.
United States National Team (1998-2006)
In 1998, Arena took over as head coach of the United States National Team. Under his leadership, the team reached the quarterfinals of the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999 and 2003. He also guided the team to the semifinals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the final of the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Arena left the national team after the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
New York Red Bulls (2006-2009)
In 2006, Arena became the head coach of the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS). He led the team to three Eastern Conference titles and two MLS Cups in 2008 and 2010. He also guided the Red Bulls to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2007.
Los Angeles Galaxy (2009-2016)
In 2009, Arena joined the Los Angeles Galaxy as general manager and head coach. Under his leadership, the Galaxy won two MLS Cups in 2011 and 2012, and two U.S. Open Cups in 2011 and 2012. They also reached the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2012.
United States National Team (2016-Present)
On November 22, 2016, Arena was appointed head coach of the United States National Team for the second time. Under his guidance, the team won the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup and reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
