Early Life and Education

Hornsby graduated from the University of Miami and the Berklee School of Music. He began his musical career playing in bars. From 1980 to 1983, he, along with his brothers Bob and John Hornsby, composed music for the film company "20th Century Fox." After recording several demos, Hornsby formed his own pop-rock band called "The Range" in 1985. The band included George Marinelli, David Mansfield, J.V. Collier, Doug Derryberry, and Bobby Hornsby.

Success with "The Range"

The title track from the band's debut album, "The Way It Is," released in 1986, topped both "The Billboard Hot 100" and "Adult Contemporary" charts and reached third place on the "Mainstream Rock Tracks" chart. Two other songs from the album also made it into the "Top 20" charts. Bruce Hornsby & The Range received a Grammy award for "Best New Artist/Group," which became the pinnacle of their career. Afterward, the musicians pursued solo projects.

Bruce Hornsby has released a total of seven albums after his time with "The Range." Although none of them replicated the success of his debut album, he received two more Grammy awards for the songs "Valley Road" (1989) and "Barcelona Mona" (1993). The discography includes:
