Early Life and EducationBruce Oldfield was born on July 14, 1950, and spent his early years in the care of the Barnardo's children's charity. Through their support, he received his education and graduated from London's St. Martin's School of Art in 1973.
Early Career and Success
Oldfield launched his first solo show at Henri Bendel in 1973, showcasing his debut collection in London. In 1975, he expanded his reach by supplying ready-to-wear lines to stores in Europe and America. His designs soon gained recognition, and he became known for his elegant and sophisticated creations.
Collaborations with Celebrities
Oldfield's reputation skyrocketed in the early 1980s when he began designing gowns for celebrities, including Princess Diana. He opened his first high-end ready-to-wear store in the early 1980s, catering to an international clientele.
Hollywood and International Clientele
Today, Oldfield's creations are worn by Hollywood actresses and European aristocracy alike. His notable clients include Sienna Miller, Jemima Khan, Angelica Huston, Melanie Griffith, Charlotte Rampling, Jerry Hall, and Queen Noor and Queen Rania of Jordan.
Awards and Honors
In 1990, Oldfield was awarded an OBE for his services to fashion and costume design. He released his bestselling autobiography, "Rootless," in 2004. Oldfield served on the board of the London Institute from 1999 to 2001 and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art and the Universities of Durham and Sheffield. He was a trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts from 2000 to 2002.
Academic Recognition
In December 2001, Oldfield was awarded an honorary Doctor of Civil Law (Hon DCL) from Northumbria University in Newcastle. In 2005, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Central England. He also serves as president of the children's charity Barnardo's.
