Bruce Palmer was a Canadian musician born in Toronto, Ontario. His musical journey began in high school, where he played bass guitar in a band called Robbie Lane & The Disciples. Later, he joined Billy Clarkson's predominantly black band and then Jack London & The Sparrows, which later evolved into Steppenwolf.

The Mynah Birds and Buffalo Springfield

In 1965, Palmer joined The Mynah Birds, where he met Neil Young. The group, formed by funk legend Rick James, released several unsuccessful singles and was marred by James's absence without leave from the U.S. Navy.

Following the Mynah Birds' dissolution, Young and Palmer set out to find Stephen Stills, another Canadian musician. By chance, they met Stills in New York City traffic and formed Buffalo Springfield with guitarist Richie Furay and drummer Dewey Martin. The band quickly gained local prominence, known for Stills and Young's guitar duels and extended live jams. Palmer's bass lines provided a steady foundation, keeping the band's sound from descending into chaos.

Downfall and Legal Troubles

However, Palmer's involvement in drug use led to legal issues and conflicts within Buffalo Springfield. After an arrest and deportation from the United States, he was replaced by a series of temporary bassists, including Young's departure. Palmer eventually returned to the band but found his role diminished.
