Biography of Bruno de Almeida
Bruno de Almeida is a director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born on March 11, 1965, in Paris, in a family with Portuguese roots. Since 1985, he has divided his residency between New York City and Lisbon.
Early Success
In 1993, his first film, the short film "The Debt," won the Canal+ Cannes Film Festival award and was selected for inclusion in 85 other film festivals, earning an additional 8 awards. The success of the film led to the creation of a television version, which was broadcast in several countries.
On the Run
In 1999, Almeida directed the feature-length crime comedy "On the Run," starring Michael Imperioli and John Ventimiglia. The film was named Best Film at the Ourense Film Festival in Spain and was nominated for the Critics' Prize at the Paris Film Festival. It also won the "Open Palm" award at the Gotham Awards in New York in 2000. "On the Run" gained a cult following after its television release in Europe and the United States.
The Art of Amália
Almeida's documentary film "The Art of Amália" (2000) depicted the life of the legendary singer Amália Rodrigues. The film achieved moderate success in the U.S. box office and was released on DVD in the United States and Europe in July 2004. It became a double-platinum seller in Portugal and topped the charts for four consecutive weeks. Another documentary by Almeida, "O Candidato Vieira" (2001), showcased the story of Portuguese rock star Manuel João Vieira's presidential campaign in 2001. The film was released on a double DVD along with a concert video of Vieira's band.
Other Projects
Almeida directed several documentary films, commercials, and music videos as part of the collective project "Other Projects." From 1999 to 2004, he was responsible for directing several films for the independent film channel IFC. In 2005, Almeida presented the musical "Live/Evil - Evil/Live," with a screenplay and choreography by Francisco Camacho. The musical premiered at the Algarve International Dance Festival and was also screened at Culturgest in Lisbon.
The Collection and Recent Work
In 2005, Almeida completed work on a collection of 24 short films titled "The Collection." He prepared and realized this project with a group of New York actors and screenwriters over four years. "The Collection" was released on DVD in April 2006. In 2007, Almeida directed the drama "The Lovebirds," which starred Michael Imperioli, John Ventimiglia, Drena De Niro, and Joaquim de Almeida. The film won the jury prize at the Fantastporto Film Festival and also received awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay at the International Film Festival in Ourense.
Almeida's documentary film "6=0 Homeostética" received special mention at the DocLisboa documentary film festival in 2008. He also participated in the editing of the documentary film "Bobby Cassidy: Counterpuncher" about former professional boxer Bobby Cassidy. As of September 2012, Almeida's latest film, the political thriller "Operação Outono" about the tragic death of Portuguese Air Force General Humberto Delgado in 1965, is in post-production.
