Biography of Brian Young
Brian Young is a Canadian and South Korean professional hockey player. He is a defenseman for the Asian Hockey League club, "High1," and the South Korean national ice hockey team.
Early Life and Career
Brian Young was born in Ennismore, Ontario, Canada. He began playing hockey at the age of fifteen and played in various Canadian youth leagues, including the junior team of the Peterborough Petes. In the 2002/03 season, Young played for the Lindsay Muskies and also made two appearances in the Ontario Hockey League for the Peterborough Petes.
During the 2003/04 season in the OHL, Young assisted his team in scoring eight goals in sixty games. In the 2005/06 season, he scored one goal and made eleven assists in sixty regular-season games, earning a plus-minus rating of 15. He also played fourteen playoff games, contributing with one assist. In the 2006/07 season, Young played sixty-four games, providing ten assists and earning a high plus-minus rating of plus 113. He played nineteen playoff games, accumulating a plus 37 rating and helping the Peterborough Petes win the J. Ross Robertson Cup.
NHL and AHL Career
Young was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2004 NHL draft. He signed a contract with the team in 2006 and played fifteen games in the National Hockey League. He also played in the American Hockey League for the Milwaukee Admirals and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, totaling thirty-two games and one assist. Young also contributed with four assists in seventeen games for the Stockton Thunder in the East Coast Hockey League. In the 2007/08 season, he played two NHL games for the Edmonton Oilers and spent most of the season with the Springfield Falcons in the AHL, where he provided seven assists in seventy-four games.
In the 2008/09 season, Young played the entire season for the Springfield Falcons, scoring three goals and making seven assists in sixty-three games. He played seven games in the AHL before joining the Stockton Thunder in the East Coast Hockey League. In forty-five regular-season games, Young scored four goals and provided seven assists. In the playoffs, he played fifteen games, scoring two goals and making one assist.
Asian Hockey League and International Career
In June 2010, Young signed a contract with the South Korean club, High1. In the 2010/11 season, he played thirty-four games, scoring three goals and making seventeen assists. Young became an alternate captain for the team in the 2011/12 season, playing thirty-six games and contributing with four goals and forty-two assists. In the 2012/13 season, he played forty-one games, scoring eight goals and providing twenty-four assists. The following season, Young played forty-one games, scoring nine goals and making thirteen assists. He also played two games in the Asian Hockey League playoffs.
On January 21, 2014, Young obtained South Korean citizenship and was called up to represent the national ice hockey team. He played two games in the first division of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
In the 2014/15 Asian Hockey League season, Young played forty-five games, scoring seven goals and making thirteen assists. In the playoffs, he contributed with three assists in six games. In the 2015/16 season, Young played forty-three games, scoring five goals and making twenty-two assists. He was once again called up to represent the South Korean national team, playing five games in the World Ice Hockey Championship and providing one assist.
