Jason Spezza: A Hockey Prodigy

Jason Anthony Rocco Spezza was born on June 13, 1983, in Mississauga, Ontario, to Italian immigrants Reno and Donna Spezza. He is the brother of Michelle and Matthew, an international hockey goaltender.

Early Modeling Career

Before embracing hockey, Spezza launched a brief modeling career as an infant when he won a baby contest and became a model. By age five, he had starred in a commercial for Minute Maid, and at seven, he was the face of Woolco and Kmart.

Junior Hockey Career

Spezza's hockey journey began in 1998 with the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In his first season, the 15-year-old amassed 61 points, earning recognition as the most promising prospect in the OHL.

NHL Draft and Debut

Spezza was drafted second overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, following Ilya Kovalchuk to the Atlanta Thrashers. His NHL debut came in the 2002-03 season, where he registered 21 points in 33 games.

Breakthrough in the NHL

Spezza's breakout season came in 2003-04, when he scored 22 goals and 55 points in 78 games. During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, he returned to the AHL with the Binghamton Senators, winning the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the league's top scorer and the Les Cunningham Award as its most valuable player.

"CASH/Pizza" Line and Stanley Cup Finals

Upon returning to Ottawa in 2005-06, Spezza became the Senators' second-line center, flanking Dany Heatley and rookie Brandon Bochenski. After Daniel Alfredsson replaced Bochenski, the trio was nicknamed "CASH" and "Pizza," becoming one of the NHL's most prolific scoring lines. That season, the Senators reached the Stanley Cup Finals, but fell to the Buffalo Sabres in the second round.

Continued Success and Injury

Spezza remained a key figure in the Senators' offense alongside Heatley and Alfredsson until an injury sidelined him. In 67 games, he scored 34 goals and finished with 87 points. His goal against the Buffalo Sabres on May 19, 2007, propelled Ottawa to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they faced the Anaheim Ducks.

Extension and Olympic Debut

Spezza signed a seven-year contract extension with the Senators, but his 2008-09 season was his least productive since his first full NHL season. In the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Spezza was initially not expected to participate, but the retirement of Joe Sakic and Ryan Getzlaf's recovery from injury cleared a path for him to join the team.

Spezza married Jennifer Snell on July 25, 2009. Together, they have two children.
