Early Life and Influences

Peter Edward Clarke, known as Budgie, was born in Lancashire, England to a working-class family. From a young age, he harbored a passion for art and aspired to study at Liverpool Polytechnic. However, his father, a carpenter, disapproved and demanded that he find a "real job." Budgie's childhood love for birds earned him his nickname while sharing an apartment with Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford in Liverpool.

Musical Beginnings

Budgie embarked on his musical journey with the bands Spitfire Boys and Big in Japan. He later joined The Slits, with whom he recorded the album "Cut." As the Guardian noted, "a man who can survive in the Slits can survive anywhere."

Siouxsie and the Banshees

In September 1979, Budgie became the drummer for the post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. He replaced Kenny Morris and made his debut on the album "Kaleidoscope." Budgie remained a constant member of the band until their disbandment in 1996.

The Creatures and Other Collaborations

In 1981, Budgie and Siouxsie formed the side project The Creatures. Budgie also collaborated with Indigo Girls on their 1992 album "Rites of Passage," toured with John Cale in 1998, and performed with Juno Reactor in 2009.

Personal Life and Marriage

Budgie and Siouxsie were married in 1991. In 1995, the Guardian described Budgie as having "stolen" Siouxsie from Severin, but the trio reportedly "came through it all." Despite their marriage, Siouxsie admitted years later that she remained "in a way married... still to Severin." Budgie and Siouxsie settled in France near Toulouse. They divorced in 2007.
