American Musician: Drummer Gary Driscoll

Gary Driscoll was an American musician and drummer who played in various bands including Elf, Rainbow, Dakota, Star Castle, Bible Black, and Jack Starr.

Early Years and Formation of The Electric Elves

Driscoll was one of the founding members of the band The Electric Elves, which was formed by Ronnie James Dio in 1967. The band went through several name changes, from The Elves to Elf, and underwent multiple lineup changes. In 1972, they caught the attention of Roger Glover and Ian Paice, who offered to produce their debut album. The band went on to open for Deep Purple on several occasions.

Elf and Joining Rainbow

Elf disbanded in February 1975 when Richie Blackmore, who had decided to leave Deep Purple, invited Dio, Driscoll, Soule, and Gruber to join his new band, Rainbow. However, in August of the same year, Blackmore dismissed Driscoll due to his preference for the R&B style, which didn't align with Blackmore's vision for the band.

Later Projects and Bible Black

After leaving Rainbow, Driscoll played in bands such as Dakota and Star Castle. He later co-founded the band Bible Black with Gruber, featuring guitarist Andrew "Duck" MacDonald and Jeff Fenholt, known for his role in the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar." Bible Black released albums titled "Ground Zero" and "Thrasher" before eventually disbanding.

Final Days and Tragic Death

Following the breakup of Bible Black, Driscoll worked as a session musician. Tragically, at the age of 41, in June 1987, he was killed by a drug addict in his New York home. The motive behind the crime remains unknown.
