Byron Schlenker's Extraordinary Tongue

American Byron Schlenker holds the world record for having the world's widest tongue, measuring an astonishing 8.6 cm. Remarkably, his teenage daughter's tongue is also wider than the previous record holder.

Record-Breaking Tongues

Byron Schlenker, a 47-year-old from Syracuse, New York, has a tongue that measures 8.6 cm, comparable to the length of a beer coaster and a few centimeters wider than an iPhone 6. His 14-year-old daughter, Emily, has a slightly narrower tongue of 7.3 cm. However, this still qualifies her as the woman with the widest tongue, as recorded in the Guinness World Records. Naturally, Byron holds the record for the widest tongue among men.

A Chance Discovery

Schlenker discovered the unusual width of his tongue by chance while browsing through a copy of the Guinness World Records at a library with his daughter for a school project. Deciding to measure his own tongue, he realized that his "flapper" was almost a centimeter wider than that of the official record holder at the time.

Celebrity Status

Since being officially recognized as having "the world's widest tongue," Byron has become somewhat of a celebrity in his hometown. "The Guinness World Records go all over the world, and it's just really cool seeing how people react to it on Facebook and things," said Schlenker, who works as a project manager.

Daughter's Tongue

His daughter added, "I didn't want anything to do with it at first. But we measured my tongue and it turned out to be wider than the previous record holder."

Family Reaction

Byron's wife, Vickie, says that friends "make jokes about Byron's tongue" and about the couple's personal life. However, she prefers not to dwell on such remarks. "We keep it PG-rated, no intimate details," Vickie said. "We're a decent family with three ladies in the house, so we just take it as a joking matter."
