Early Life and Wrestling Career

Cain Velasquez is a Mexican-American professional fighter competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Velasquez's wrestling prowess began early on, with him winning the NJCAA Collegiate Wrestling Heavyweight Championship in 2002 while representing Iowa Central Community College. He went on to become a two-time NCAA All-American Div 1 NCAA Wrestler in 2005 and 2006 while attending Arizona State University, placing 5th and 4th in the Heavyweight category, respectively. In 2005, he was named Pac-10 Conference Wrestler of the Year.

Transition to Mixed Martial Arts

After his successful collegiate wrestling career, Velasquez transitioned to mixed martial arts, training at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. He quickly made a name for himself, earning a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu within a year and eventually achieving a black belt under the tutelage of Dave Camarillo.

Reign as UFC Heavyweight Champion

In 2010, Velasquez made history when he defeated Brock Lesnar via technical knockout in the first round at UFC 121, becoming the UFC Heavyweight Champion. He lost the title to Junior dos Santos in 2011 but regained it in a rematch in 2012. Velasquez successfully defended his title against dos Santos again in 2013.

Setbacks and Rebounds

After a nearly two-year absence, Velasquez returned to the Octagon in 2015 but lost to Fabricio Werdum in Mexico City. The altitude and short acclimatization period were cited as contributing factors to his defeat. However, Velasquez's resilience shone through as he made a comeback in 2016 by defeating Travis Browne.

Legacy and Recognition

Velasquez is widely considered one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time. He has earned numerous accolades, including three "Knockout of the Night" bonuses and one "Performance of the Night" bonus in the UFC. He has also been named "Fighter of the Year" by multiple organizations, including MMAFighting.com, Inside MMA, MMA Live, and MMAjunkie.com.

Future Prospects

Velasquez's future in the UFC remains uncertain due to ongoing health issues. Nonetheless, his legacy as a dominant heavyweight champion and one of the most skilled fighters in the sport's history is secure.
