Twin Brothers From UK
Identical twin boys from the United Kingdom were born prematurely, but only one, Mitchell, has developed typically. Callum was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy at eight months old.
Hope for Callum
Dee Buchanan, the mother of the twins, has found hope for Callum in an innovative surgery performed by surgeons in the United States. The surgery aims to remove damaged nerve fibers that are causing Callum's disability.
Call for Funds
The surgery and the Buchanans' stay in the United States will cost £75,000, of which they have currently raised £35,000. They have launched a fundraising campaign to cover the remaining expenses.
Premature Birth
Dee's pregnancy was complicated, and the twins were born three months early. Mitchell was born healthy, but Callum was diagnosed with spastic diplegia, a type of cerebral palsy that affects the legs more than the arms.
Diagnosis
Callum's condition was caused by periventricular leukomalacia, a brain injury often seen in premature babies. Brain scans showed that Callum had "flashes" in the back of his brain, indicating the damage.
Selective Posterior Rhizotomy
The Buchanans learned about selective posterior rhizotomy, a surgery that treats the nerve fibers causing Callum's condition. They have decided to take Callum to St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri for the procedure.
Journey to America
The Buchanans will travel to the United States in June for Callum's preoperative assessment and surgery three days later. Dee is hopeful that the surgery will give Callum the chance to walk alongside his brother and lead a fulfilling life.
