Edward Bernard Peter Buckmelter was an American convicted felon and businessman who spent his life in the public eye, starting as a model and actor and eventually becoming a millionaire entrepreneur.
Early Life and Career
Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Buckmelter grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he graduated from North High School and Phoenix College. He began his career as a fashion model in Europe, starring in television commercials and two films. He eventually moved back to the United States, where he joined his friend's company, Rapid Information Services. After it went bankrupt, Buckmelter purchased the company for $250,000 and renamed it Gopher Courier. He became a millionaire after selling it five years later.
Political Activism
Buckmelter's political activism began when Evan Mecham was elected governor of Arizona in 1986. As a resident of Arizona, Buckmelter led an effort to recall the governor, accusing him of racism and corruption. This experience prompted him to change his party affiliation from Republican to Democratic, and he went on to make significant donations to Democratic politicians. In 2007, he ran unsuccessfully for the West Hollywood, California, city council.
Criminal Investigations
In 2017, a young African American man named Gemmel Moore was found dead in Buckmelter's apartment. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office ruled the death an accidental drug overdose. However, Moore's mother was skeptical and brought the case to the attention of local newspapers and news outlets. The death was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, but the Los Angeles County District Attorney declined to press charges against Buckmelter.
In September 2019, Buckmelter was arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, methamphetamine possession, and maintaining a drug den. He was convicted on nine federal charges in 2021 and sentenced to 30 years in prison in April 2022.
