Early Life and EducationCamryn Manheim (born Debra Frances Manheim) was born on March 8, 1961, in Caldwell, New Jersey, to a Jewish family. She grew up in Peoria, Illinois, where her father, Jerome Manheim, was a mathematics professor, and her mother, Sylvia, was a schoolteacher.
Manheim's interest in acting emerged at age 16 while working at a Renaissance Faire. Pursuing her passion, she moved to New York City and graduated with a degree in fine arts from New York University in 1987. She then enrolled in the Atlantic Theater Company's acting school.
Career Breakthrough
Her proficiency in sign language landed Manheim a job at a clinic in New York City. This skill proved instrumental in securing a guest role on "Law & Order" and a starring role in "The Practice," where she played a child psychologist. For this portrayal, she earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Notably, she won two Emmy Awards (1998 and 1999), and a Golden Globe Award (1999) for Best Supporting Actress.
