Karel Godin de Beaufort
Karel Godin de Beaufort was a Dutch nobleman and racing driver who competed in Formula One from 1957 to 1964.
Early Career
Karel Godin de Beaufort's racing career began in 1956 with a Porsche. He made his Formula One debut at the German Grand Prix in 1957.
Full Seasons in Formula One
From 1961 onwards, de Beaufort participated in full Formula One seasons. He acquired a Porsche 718 Rob Walker and competed in several races.
Notable Achievements
During the 1961-1963 seasons, de Beaufort scored four championship points. He also achieved significant success in non-championship races, including a second-place finish at the Syracuse and Rome Grands Prix and a third-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix in 1963.
Tragic Accident
Karel Godin de Beaufort's life was cut short in a fatal crash at the Nürburgring circuit during practice for the 1964 German Grand Prix. His car left the track at the notorious "Bergwerk" corner, and he was ejected from the vehicle. De Beaufort sustained severe head, chest, and leg injuries.
Death and Legacy
De Beaufort was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to a neurological hospital in Cologne. He succumbed to his injuries the following day. Opel, the car manufacturer, honored de Beaufort by naming a new engine after him.
