Early Life and Education
Johann Gustav Eduard Naegeli was a Swiss composer, choral conductor, and music educator. He received his first music lessons from Johann Daniel Elster, who worked in the vicinity of Wettingen in the mid-1840s. In 1857-1858, Naegeli studied at the Leipzig Conservatory as a bass singer.
Career
After studying in Leipzig, Naegeli began his professional career as a music teacher, choirmaster, and organist. He held positions in Muri from 1859 and in Rapperswil from 1863. In 1866, he settled in Zurich, where he led the city's male choir and other choral ensembles.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1896, Naegeli was appointed as the deputy director (zweite Direktor) of the Zurich Conservatory. He taught choral singing, conducting, and chamber music. Among his notable students was Otmar Schoeck. In 1889, Naegeli was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich.
