Hermann Wrangel: A Renowned Swedish Admiral and Field Marshal

Early Life and Entry into Military Service

Hermann Wrangel was born into a prominent Baltic German family. His father, Herman Wrangel, was the governor-general of Livonia and a field marshal. In 1627, Hermann Wrangel embarked on his military career, joining the campaigns of Gustavus Adolphus in Germany.

Naval and Army Command

By 1641, Wrangel had risen to the rank of major general. In 1643, he became the admiral of the Swedish fleet and achieved a decisive victory against the Danish navy at the Battle of Fehmarn in 1644. Subsequently, he commanded troops in Holstein and Silesia.

Triumphs in the Thirty Years' War

In 1646, Wrangel was elevated to the rank of count and appointed to command Swedish forces in Germany. He allied with French troops under Turenne and compelled the Elector of Bavaria to make peace in 1647. However, the Elector later resumed hostilities, leading to Wrangel's further defeat of Bavarian forces in 1648, resulting in his control of Bavaria until the war's end.

Polish-Swedish War

Wrangel participated in the Polish-Swedish War, accompanying King Charles X Gustav in 1655. He played a role in the Battle of Warsaw in 1656.

Capture of Kronborg and Alliance with France

During the Dano-Swedish War, Wrangel seized the fortress of Kronborg in 1658. When Louis XIV waged war on Germany, Sweden allied with France in 1674. Wrangel invaded Brandenburg with 16,000 troops, but his illness halted their progress, forcing the Swedes to withdraw.

Retirement and Legacy

Wrangel retired shortly after and passed away in 1676. His military prowess and contributions to the Swedish Empire during the Thirty Years' War cemented his legacy as a skilled and respected commander.
