Childhood and Early Career
Karl Oliver Hagelin was born in Södertälje, Sweden, in 1988. He began his hockey career in the youth system of Södertälje SK, where he made waves with his impressive scoring prowess. In two seasons with the J20 SuperElit team, he notched an impressive 44 goals and 51 assists, ranking him fifth in the league's overall scoring and fourth in goals-per-game average.
College Career at Michigan
In 2007, Hagelin moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to join the University of Michigan Wolverines hockey team. As the first Swedish player to ever play hockey at Michigan, Hagelin quickly established himself as a valuable asset. During the 2009-2010 season, he helped the Wolverines win the league championship and was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team.
Hagelin's breakout season came in 2010-2011. He earned the league's Best Defensive Forward award, was named to the All-CCHA Team, and was a finalist for the league's Player of the Year award. His outstanding performance also earned him national recognition, as he was named to the All-America Third Team and the AHCA/Old Time Hockey All-American Ice Hockey Team West Second Team.
International Success
Hagelin represented Sweden at the World Junior Championships in 2008, where the team won the silver medal. His international career continued to flourish, and he was selected to play for Sweden at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where he helped the team secure another silver medal.
NHL Career
Hagelin was drafted by the New York Rangers in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a contract with the Rangers after Michigan's loss in the 2011 NCAA championship game and made his NHL debut on November 25, 2011. Hagelin made an immediate impact, registering his first NHL point with an assist in his first game and scoring his first NHL goal the following day.
Hagelin quickly established himself as a versatile and reliable player for the Rangers. He was known for his speed, defensive prowess, and ability to score clutch goals. In the 2012 All-Star Game, Hagelin showcased his remarkable speed by winning the fastest skater competition, setting a record that year.
Later Career
Hagelin continued to play for the Rangers until 2015, when he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks. He later joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 and the Washington Capitals in 2021. Throughout his NHL career, Hagelin remained a valuable contributor, known for his speed, defense, and clutch scoring.
