Directorial Debut and Breakthrough
Lizzani's directorial debut came in 1951 with the war drama "Achtung! Banditi!" In 1954, he rose to fame with the political drama "Chronicle of Poor Lovers," establishing himself as a masterful genre director. His reputation grew with subsequent films like "Bandits in Milan," "Crazy Joe," and "Roma Bene."
Versatility and Social Commentary
While known for his crime dramas and comedies, Lizzani also explored social and political issues. His 1961 film "L'oro di Roma" depicted the deportation of Jews from Rome. His work, "Bandits in Milan," earned him both the David di Donatello Award for Best Director and the Silver Ribbon for Best Screenplay in 1968.
Television and International Recognition
In the 1980s, Lizzani expanded his work into Italian television. From 1979 to 1982, he served as the director of the Venice International Film Festival. His film, "Caro Gorbaciov!" premiered at the festival, garnering international acclaim. He later served on the jury of the Berlin Film Festival in 1994.
Late Career and Honours
In 1996, Lizzani released "Celluloide," a tribute to the making of "Rome, Open City." The film's screenplay earned him a second David di Donatello Award.
Tragic End
On October 5, 2013, Lizzani took his own life by jumping from the balcony of his apartment in Rome. The reasons behind his suicide remain unknown.
