Russian Film Director: Andrei Gerasimov
Education and CareerAndrei Gerasimov graduated from the Kuibyshev Civil Engineering Institute in 1961 and the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 1965. From 1965 to 2001, he worked as a film director at the Central Studio for Scientific, Popular Science, and Educational Films.
Filmmaking
Throughout his career, Gerasimov created over 40 films of various genres and themes. His notable works include the "Creators of National Weapons" and "They Forged the Weapon of Victory" dilogy, for which he received the Silver Medal named after A.P. Dovzhenko. His other acclaimed dilogy, "Enthusiasts" and "Children of the Galaxy," was nominated for the State Prize of the USSR.
Industry Involvement
Gerasimov actively participated in the film community. He became a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR in 1971 and held various positions, including Chairman of the All-Union Commission for Scientific Film. In 1986, he was elected Secretary of the Board of the USSR Union of Cinematographers. He also served as Chairman of the Audit Commission of the Russian Union of Cinematographers from 1995 to 1998.
International Recognition
In 1986, Gerasimov was made a member of the International Association for Scientific Films. Four years later, he was elected Vice-President of the Association's section for scientific films. In 2002, he became a full member of the National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Teaching and Mentorship
From 1988 to 2001, Gerasimov was the Head of Non-Fiction Film Directing Workshops at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors. Since 2001, he has been the Rector of the Higher Courses and leads a filmmaking workshop.
