Early Life and Club Career

Gonzalo Alfonso "Flaco" Alvarado was born in Escazu, Costa Rica on March 16, 1928. His illustrious football career took off in 1944 when he joined C.S. Alajuelense. It was with Alajuelense that Alvarado achieved remarkable success, capturing six Costa Rican league championships throughout his tenure.

Move to Mexico and Return to Alajuelense

In 1947, Alvarado made a brief move to Mexico to play for Club America. However, he returned to Alajuelense the following year and spent the next 12 seasons with the team. During this time, he led Alajuelense to five additional league titles and notched 159 appearances in the Primera Division.

International Career

Alvarado's international career was equally impressive. He represented the Costa Rican national team on 25 occasions, helping them win three CCCF Championships (1953, 1955, 1960) and secure a silver medal at the 1951 Pan American Games.

Later Career and Retirement

After a brief stint with America de Cali in 1950, Alvarado returned to Alajuelense and played until his retirement in 1960. His final professional match was a 2-1 victory over the Hong Kong national team on November 30, 1960.

Death

Gonzalo Alvarado passed away on July 27, 2024, at the age of 96, after a brief illness. His legacy as a legendary Costa Rican goalkeeper remains etched in the annals of football history.
