Early Life and Career

Carlos Moyá was born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on August 27, 1976. Despite being naturally left-handed, Moyá plays tennis with his right hand, unlike fellow Mallorcan Rafael Nadal who is right-handed in everyday life but plays left-handed in tennis. Moyá began playing tennis at the age of nine.

Professional Tennis Career

Moyá turned professional in 1995 and quickly rose up the world rankings. He achieved his highest ranking of No. 1 in March 1999, becoming the first Spaniard to ever hold the top spot. Moyá held the No. 1 ranking for two weeks.

With 575 singles wins as of June 2010, Moyá ranks third among active tennis players behind Roger Federer (more than 700 wins) and Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick (both with over 500 wins).

Between 1995 and 2007, Moyá won at least one tournament every season, except for 1999 when he became world No. 1. He retired from professional tennis in 2010.
