Biography of Carlton Michael Gary
Early Life and CrimesCarlton Michael Gary was born on December 15, 1952, in Columbus, Georgia. After moving to Albany, two elderly women were beaten, raped, and strangled, with one dying and the other surviving. Gary came to the attention of the police after robbing an elderly woman in her home. He confessed to being an accomplice to the perpetrator who raped and killed an 85-year-old retired teacher, and his fingerprints were found at the victim's house. Gary testified in court against his accomplice, claiming that he left the victim's apartment while the other man raped and killed her. However, the accomplice was later acquitted when the investigation was expanded.
After his release from prison in 1975, Gary moved to Syracuse, where two elderly women were attacked, raped, and strangled in their homes, with one surviving. The attacks occurred four days apart. The surviving victim was unable to identify the assailant as he attacked her in the dark, but she believed he was a mustached man who strangled her with a scarf. Gary was arrested again for violating the terms of his parole and for robbery when he attempted to sell stolen coins from the same house in Syracuse where one of the surviving victims lived. In August 1977, Gary escaped from a low-security prison by sawing through the bars of his cell and returned to Columbus. It is believed that he raped and/or killed seven elderly women between 1977 and 1978 in Columbus. He became known as the "Stocking Strangler" for using stockings to beat, sexually assault, and strangle his victims.
Conviction and Controversies
Gary's fingerprints were found at four of the crime scenes, and all of his victims were white, elderly women living alone. He also committed bank and restaurant robberies in Georgia and neighboring states. When Gary attempted to rob a restaurant in South Carolina, an employee realized that his gun was not loaded. Gary fled the restaurant, but he got stuck in a swamp during the pursuit and was apprehended. He was convicted on August 26, 1986, for a murder that occurred on May 5, 1984, and was sentenced to death the following day. He is currently on death row in Georgia.
Some supporters of Gary claim that he was denied state funding to hire a lawyer to challenge his conviction. They also argue that Gary's fingerprints were not initially present in the case, only appearing seven years later during a review. They further allege that Gary's alleged confession was not recorded or signed by him, and it was simply based on the memory of a police officer. Gary himself denies ever confessing to the murders he was convicted of. Supporters argue that the antigens in Gary's semen do not match those of the perpetrator, and they claim that bite marks on the victims do not implicate Gary. They assert that all of this evidence was hidden by the prosecution during the trial.
In 2007, a DNA test provided a positive match linking Gary to the rape and murder of 40-year-old Marion Fisher. She was raped and killed after leaving a bar in Nedrow, New York.
