Biography of Carmen Tarleton

Carmen's biography initially followed a typical path - she studied, worked, and got married. For a while, her marriage seemed successful, with her husband treating her with kindness and respect. However, the relationship eventually ended in divorce, and in September 2007, Carmen's ex-husband violently attacked her with a baseball bat and doused her with industrial-strength lye. As a result, Carmen suffered burns on 80% of her body, lost her sight, and her face was unrecognizable.
Fighting Against All Odds
Despite the grim prognosis, Carmen, known for her strong willpower, began a long and arduous battle for survival. She underwent around forty surgeries at a Boston clinic, which restored her life but left her face unrecognizable. Four years after the attack, specialists made the bold decision to reconstruct Carmen's face entirely. This risky operation, considering her weakened immune system, aimed to replace her disfigured face with a new one. After a year-long search, a suitable donor was found. Carmen underwent a seventeen-hour surgery in February of the previous year, during which surgeons successfully transplanted Cheryl Ryder's face onto Carmen's, including her nose, neck skin, lips, arteries, nerves, and facial muscles. Although Carmen would not resemble her donor, she regained approximately 80% of facial mobility.
A New Lease on Life
Following the operation, Carmen decided to share her new face with the world, alleviating the dramatic impact she had anticipated. She expressed her relief that the ordeal was finally over and mentioned how she enjoyed her new appearance. Carmen's reconstructed face allowed her to walk in public without frightening others. Six years after the attack, Carmen regained clear and coherent speech, and specialists predicted that she would regain the ability to feel temperature within three months and smile within six months. Throughout her journey, Carmen remained optimistic, stating that there is nothing one cannot overcome.
An Unexpected Setback
However, in 2019, it was revealed that Carmen experienced a rejection of the face transplant six years after the surgery. The worst-case scenario would require her to return to her burned and disfigured face. Doctors noted that face transplants have limited lifespans, and despite advancements in the field, the long-term benefits and risks remain largely unknown. Many patients suffer from side effects of immunosuppressant drugs, and additional surgeries are sometimes necessary. Carmen had experienced episodes of redness and swelling in her transplanted face before, but doctors had managed to address these issues. In August 2019, the symptoms returned, this time much more severe.
A Fearful Future
The worst possible outcome would be rapid tissue necrosis, which would necessitate the removal of the donor tissues and reconstruction of Carmen's original face, scarred by the attack. This is Carmen's greatest fear.
