Princess of Monaco
Carolina is the Princess of Monaco, the Hereditary Princess of Hanover, and the current de facto ruler of the country. She is the daughter of the late Prince Rainier III of Monaco and American film actress Grace Kelly.
Early Life and Education

Carolina spent most of her childhood in her mother's family home in Philadelphia. She was considered the heir to the throne until the birth of her brother in 1958. She is also the legitimate heir to the Dukes of Polignac, making her a descendant of French nobility. Carolina received a French baccalaureate degree with honors in 1974. She continued her studies at the University of Paris, where she earned a degree in philosophy with additional specialization in psychology and biology. She is fluent in French, English, Spanish, German, and Italian.
Marriages and Children

Carolina's first marriage was to Parisian banker Philippe Junot in June 1978. They divorced amicably in October 1980, with the Catholic Church recognizing the annulment in 1992. She had a brief romance with Robertino Rossellini, son of Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman, but it did not lead to a serious relationship. In December 1983, Carolina married Stefano Casiraghi, an Italian sportsman and heir to a major industrial enterprise. They had three children together. Sadly, Casiraghi died in a boating accident in October 1990. Carolina's third and current husband is Ernst August, Prince of Hanover. Despite the title's lack of significance in Germany since 1918, their marriage took place in Monaco in January 1999. They have one daughter together, Princess Alexandra.
Role as Ruler of Monaco
Carolina is currently the official ruler of Monaco because her brother, Albert II, does not have legitimate children. If Albert does not fulfill this requirement or outlives his sister, Carolina would become the second sovereign princess in the country's history. The title was previously held by Louise-Hippolyte Grimaldi, but her reign was short-lived, and she ruled as a regent. Albert currently has two children, a son and a daughter, but both were born out of wedlock. Until Albert has a legitimate heir, or marries the mother of his son, stewardess Nicole Coste, Carolina will continue to be in line for the throne. The adoption of a legitimate heir is also not an option, as Monaco's constitution was changed in 2002, rendering this method ineffective in the succession battle.
