Caroline Harrison: First Lady of the United States
Early Life and EducationBorn on October 1, 1832, in Oxford, Ohio, Caroline Lavinia Scott was the second daughter of John W. Scott and Mary Potts Neal Scott. She met Benjamin Harrison while attending Miami University where he was a student.
Courtship and Marriage
Their courtship spanned nearly a decade before their marriage on October 20, 1853. Together, they had three children: Russell Benjamin (1854-1936), Mary Scott (1856-1930), and a daughter born in 1861 who died the same year.
First Lady of the United States
In 1889, Harrison was elected President of the United States, and their family moved into the White House. As First Lady, Caroline Harrison oversaw renovations to the residence, including expanding bathrooms, installing modern plumbing, and hanging new paintings. In 1891, electricity was introduced to the White House under her leadership. She was also actively involved in charitable fundraising.
Illness and Death
In late 1891, Caroline Harrison contracted tuberculosis. Despite her efforts to continue her philanthropic work, her condition worsened, and she passed away on October 25, 1892. Her passing came just weeks before her husband lost his bid for a second term.
Legacy
During the remainder of Harrison's presidential term, their daughter, Mary Harrison, served as acting First Lady. Caroline Harrison's legacy as First Lady centers around her efforts to modernize the White House and her active involvement in charitable work.
