Early Life and Education
Caroline Bennett was born in Toronto, Canada on December 20, 1950. In 1974, she graduated from the University of Toronto's medical school.
Medical Career
After completing her medical studies, Bennett worked for 20 years as a family physician at Wellesley Hospital and Women's College Hospital in Toronto. She was a founding partner of Bedford Medical Associates and served as an assistant professor at the University of Toronto.
Her involvement in the campaign to save Women's College Hospital sparked her interest in politics.
Political Career
In 1997, Bennett was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal Party member, representing the riding of Toronto-St. Paul's. She has been re-elected in every subsequent federal election, most recently in 2021.
From December 2003 to November 2015, she served as Minister of State for Public Health. In November 2015, she was appointed Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, a position she held until October 2021.
Current Role
On October 26, 2021, Bennett was sworn in as Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.
Activism and Advocacy
Bennett is a vocal advocate for Israel. She co-authored the book "Kill or Cure?: How Canadians Can Remake Their Health Care System?" in 2000.
Awards and Recognition
Bennett has received numerous awards for her work, including:- 1986: Royal Canadian Humane Association's Medal of Merit
- 2002: Equal Voice's EVE Award
- 2003: Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health's first-ever Champion of Mental Health Award
Personal Life
Bennett is married to Canadian film producer Peter O'Brian. They have two sons, Jack and Ben.
