Early Life and Political Background
Kumaratunga comes from a political dynasty. Her father, Solomon Bandaranaike, and mother, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, both served as Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka. Her husband, Vijaya Kumaratunga, was the founder of the Sri Lanka People's Party (SLPP), who was assassinated in 1988.
Presidential Tenure
Kumaratunga became the President of Sri Lanka in 1994 and served two terms until 2005. She was the leader of the People's Alliance, a five-party coalition. Her presidency was marked by efforts to end the decades-long civil war between the government and Tamil separatist groups.
Mother-Daughter Leadership
