Early Life and EducationCarrie Snodgress was born on October 27, 1946, in Park Ridge, Illinois. She graduated summa cum laude from Northern Illinois University, where she developed her passion for acting.
Stage and Screen Debut
After graduating, Snodgress performed on stage at Chicago's Goodman Theatre. She made her television debut in minor roles before gaining recognition in the 1969 film "Easy Rider." In 1970, she starred in "Rabbit, Run."
Breakthrough Role and Oscar Nomination
Snodgress's breakthrough role came in "Diary of a Mad Housewife" (1970). Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and two Golden Globe Awards for Best Comedy Actress and Female Star of the Year.
Personal Life and Career Hiatus
Following the success of "Diary of a Mad Housewife," Snodgress took a hiatus from acting. She married rock musician Neil Young and gave birth to a son with cerebral palsy. Her marriage ended in 1975, adding to her personal challenges.
Return to Acting and Broadway Debut
Despite the obstacles, Snodgress returned to film in 1978. She also made her Broadway debut in 1981 and appeared in notable productions such as "All the Way Home," "Oh! What a Lovely War," and "Tartuffe."
Later Career and Untimely Death
Snodgress continued to act throughout the 1980s and 1990s. However, her health declined due to liver failure. She passed away at the age of 57 in 2004, while awaiting a liver transplant.
