Early Life and Education
Ben Barnes was born on August 20, 1981, in London, United Kingdom. His mother, Trisha Barnes, is a family therapist, and his father, Thomas Barnes, is a psychiatry professor at Imperial College London. Ben lives in London with his younger brother Jack. He attended Homefield Preparatory School and King's College School, where he studied alongside actor Khalid Abdalla and comedian Tom Basden. At Kingston University, Barnes studied drama and English literature.
Early Career
In 2004, Ben Barnes was the vocalist in the group "Hyrise," which was intended to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, he left the group the day after a failed qualifying round. In 2006, he began to land small roles on television, appearing in an episode of the soap opera "Doctors," the TV drama "Split Decision" about a teenage girl starting a new school, and finally, in 2007, he had his breakthrough role. Barnes played the father of the main character in his youth in the family fantasy film "Stardust," based on the book by Neil Gaiman. The movie also starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Claire Danes, Rupert Everett, Charlie Cox, Peter O'Toole, and was directed by Matthew Vaughn. Audiences left the theaters believing in magic.
Success and Main Roles
In 2008, Barnes unexpectedly landed the lead role in the film "Bigga Than Ben," directed by Suzie Halewood, based on the book by P. Tetersky and S. Sakin. The tagline of the movie reads, "How we bent London," summarizing the plot. Despite his scruffy appearance, Barnes managed to capture the hearts of many women in this role. That same year, he starred in the romantic comedy "Easy Virtue" as John Whittaker, a young Englishman whose family hopes to save their estate through a profitable marriage. However, he unexpectedly brings home a young American wife who stands out in their dilapidated ancestral home. The film also featured Jessica Biel, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Colin Firth. However, Barnes' biggest success in 2008 came with another film, "Prince Caspian," part of "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. Director Andrew Adamson had been searching for an actor to play Prince Caspian for over a year when he discovered Ben Barnes just three weeks before filming began. To add a romantic touch to the film, the creators slightly adjusted the story, casting the 26-year-old Barnes as a 17-year-old Caspian, although the character was originally 13 years old in the book.
Recent Projects and Philanthropy
Barnes's next significant role was as Dorian Gray in the 2009 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray," alongside British cinema star Colin Firth. This incredibly beautiful and dark film, set in the Victorian era, was a well-deserved success. In 2010, Barnes appeared in two new films: "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," where he played an older Prince Caspian, and the thriller "Locked In."
Aside from his acting career, Barnes is also a talented singer with a good baritone voice. He plays the piano and drums. He maintains his physical fitness through swimming, tennis, basketball, and cricket. Barnes stands at a height of 183 cm.
