Biography of Cary Cooper

Cary Cooper, a British psychologist and professor, is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). He is a professor of organizational psychology and health at the Lancaster University Management School. Cooper has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University and was elected an honorary fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Therapy at the Royal College of Physicians. He also received an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Sheffield.

Cooper is the founder of Robertson Cooper Limited, a company that employs business psychologists and well-being specialists. Born on April 28, 1940, in a family with Romanian roots, Cooper holds a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Science in Management Economics degree, and a Doctor of Science degree. Prior to his work at Lancaster University, Cooper was the head of the Manchester School of Management (UMIST) in the 1980s. Since 2002, he has been the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UMIST.

From 1979 to 1980, Cooper served as the Chairman of the Education and Development Division of the Academy of Management, a professional association responsible for publishing several scientific journals and organizing conferences. During the same period, he was the founding president of the British Academy of Management (BAM). In June 2005, Cooper was appointed as the head of the Sunningdale Institute, a "virtual academy of leading thinkers in management, organization, and leadership." This institute, affiliated with the UK National School of Government, brings together scholars and industry professionals from around the world to consult on important issues related to the organization of the UK public sector.

In addition to his academic and professional roles, Cooper is also the CEO of Robertson Cooper Limited, where business psychologists and well-being specialists work. He co-founded the company in 1999 alongside Ivan Robertson. Cooper was the founder and chief editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior. He obtained British citizenship in 2003 and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University in the same year. In 2005, he was elected an honorary fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Therapy at the Royal College of Physicians. Cooper received an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Sheffield in 2011.

Cooper frequently gives interviews to the British press, including BBC and ITV, where he shares his insights on various topics and provides commentary on current events.
