Catalina Sandino Moreno was born on April 19, 1981, in Bogota, Colombia. Initially, Catalina had no plans of pursuing a career in acting. She intended to dedicate her life to advertising and even graduated from university in that field. However, fate had other plans for her. In 2004, she caught the attention of a television agent, which led her to move to New York.

Breakthrough Film Role

In New York, Catalina auditioned for the film "Maria Full of Grace" and was surprised to discover that she was one of the top three contenders for the lead role. She ultimately won the part, beating out 900 other applicants. Her performance in the film garnered critical acclaim, and in 2004, she received the Silver Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival for her outstanding portrayal in the gripping drama.

The film tells the story of Maria, a 17-year-old girl who works on a flower plantation in Colombia. Tired of living in poverty, she decides to smuggle drugs from Colombia to the United States as her only chance for a better life. Critics and film enthusiasts compared her performance to the likes of Anna Magnani in "Rome, Open City" and Sophia Loren in "Two Women."
