Biography of Catalina Moreno
Catalina Sandino Moreno was born on April 19, 1981, in Bogota, Colombia. Initially, Catalina had no plans of pursuing a career in acting. She intended to dedicate her life to advertising and even graduated from university in that field. However, fate had other plans for her. In 2004, she caught the attention of a television agent, which led her to move to New York.

Breakthrough Film Role
In New York, Catalina auditioned for the film "Maria Full of Grace" and was surprised to discover that she was one of the top three contenders for the lead role. She ultimately won the part, beating out 900 other applicants. Her performance in the film garnered critical acclaim, and in 2004, she received the Silver Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival for her outstanding portrayal in the gripping drama.

The film tells the story of Maria, a 17-year-old girl who works on a flower plantation in Colombia. Tired of living in poverty, she decides to smuggle drugs from Colombia to the United States as her only chance for a better life. Critics and film enthusiasts compared her performance to the likes of Anna Magnani in "Rome, Open City" and Sophia Loren in "Two Women." Following the success at Berlinale, the film won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and the Jerusalem Film Festival.

Theater and Acting Philosophy
Despite her success in film, Catalina has always considered acting in movies as a casual job and has taken her work in theater more seriously. After her breakthrough film, she moved to New York and enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Recently, she played one of the main roles in a production of Shakespeare's historical chronicle "King John."

Catalina is not fond of the stereotypical portrayal of Latin American women in the film industry. She wants to challenge the archetype of the beautiful and seductive Latin woman who falls in love with the main character and looks great in a bikini. She aims to prove that women from Latin America can be completely different from these stereotypes.
Continuation of Acting Career
Catalina continues to act in both American and Spanish-language films. Her every new project is closely followed by film critics. In 2006, she married an electrician whom she met on a film set. According to friends, they are incredibly happy and are considering starting a family together.
