Kees Groot: A Dutch Footballing Legend
Early Years and Professional CareerKees Groot, a renowned Dutch footballer, began his journey in his hometown of Zaandijk, playing for the local club of the same name. Later, he advanced to the semi-professional club Stormvogels, where he shared the field with his younger brother, Henk Groot, who was six years his junior.
Triumphs with Ajax
In 1959, both Kees and Henk joined the esteemed Amsterdam club Ajax. During his first season with the team, Kees scored an impressive 29 league goals, while his brother surpassed him by nine. In that same season, he celebrated his first Dutch Championship triumph, followed by the Dutch Cup victory in 1971. Kees also played a crucial role in Ajax's historic Intertoto Cup triumph in 1962, where they defeated Feyenoord 4-2 in the final.
Return to Roots and American Adventure
At the age of 32 in 1964, Kees returned to his former club Zaandijk. Three years later, along with Ko Prins and Theo Laseroms, he embarked on an adventure to the Pittsburgh Phantoms in the United States, a league not officially recognized by FIFA.
Later Career and Post-Retirement
Upon his return to the Netherlands in 1968, Kees retired from professional football. After hanging up his boots, he found fulfillment in coaching Ajax's youth team.
Legacy
Kees Groot passed away on March 15, 1988, at the age of 56. His legacy as a skilled and accomplished footballer continues to inspire generations of aspiring players in his native country and beyond.
