A Dental Visit Turns Life-ChangingAt the age of 22, Ceri Jones, a chef from North Wales, sought a dentist's appointment for an assumed abscess. However, a rare form of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, was discovered, affecting her salivary glands. A massive 36-hour facial reconstruction surgery ensued to remove her left eye and replace parts of her jaw and skull with titanium.
Battling a Progressive Disease
The tumor's progression forced Jones to undergo further surgeries, including the removal of her teeth on the left side of her face and a tissue and muscle transplant from her right thigh. Unfortunately, the cancer continued to spread, necessitating specialized proton radiation therapy in Jacksonville, Florida.
Unique Nature of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma
Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare cancer that affects the secretory glands, including the salivary glands. It progresses slowly but can cause frequent recurrences and spread to distant sites. The exact cause of the disease remains unknown, but genetic mutations are implicated.
A Long and Challenging Journey
Jones's arduous journey included severe headaches, facial pain, and countless medical procedures. She underwent sedation for two weeks during the extensive surgery and endured complications like cerebral spinal fluid leakage.
Hope in the Face of Adversity
Despite the challenges, Jones's family and friends remain hopeful. They launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise £5,000 for medical expenses and support. Jones's unwavering strength and determination have inspired those around her.
