Biography of Cha Jun Hwan
Junior PeriodCha Jun Hwan was born in Seoul, South Korea in October 2001 and started figure skating at the age of seven. Despite starting late, he quickly showed promise and participated in the Junior National Championships of South Korea, where he finished fourth. The following year, he became the Junior Champion and repeated this success a year later. However, due to his age, he was not eligible to compete in international competitions. Instead, Cha decided to compete in the adult Korean Championships, where he consistently placed among the top contenders. In the winter of 2016, he participated in the II Winter Youth Olympic Games in Norway and the Junior World Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, where he showcased his talent. During this time, Cha relocated to Toronto to train under Brian Orser.
New Pre-Olympic Season
In September, Cha began the new pre-Olympic season by competing in the Junior Grand Prix in Japan, which was his debut in the Grand Prix series. He won the competition, breaking his previous records and setting a new record for juniors. He also won the final Junior Grand Prix event in Dresden, securing his spot in the Junior Grand Prix Final. In Marseille in December, he won the bronze medal, competing against top Russian skaters. In January, he became the national champion for the first time at the national championships in Cannes. In March, he competed in the Junior World Championships in Taipei, where he faced tough competition from Russian skaters and placed fifth overall. Despite this, he improved his previous scores in both the short program and the overall score, briefly holding the second-place spot after the short program.
Adult Period
In the new Olympic season, Cha made his debut in the Grand Prix series at the Canadian event, where he finished in the middle of the standings. However, he experienced a flare-up of an old injury and decided to skip the next Grand Prix event.
