Armed with this newfound passion, he established his own troupe in Tel Aviv and played a pivotal role in creating Haifa's Municipal Theatre in the early 1960s.

Topol's film debut came in 1961 with the Israeli drama "I Like Mike." His breakout role arrived in 1964 with the film "Sallah Shabati," earning him a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. His commanding performance as the titular character, a naïve but well-intentioned Yemenite immigrant, resonated with audiences and cemented his status as a rising star.
'Fiddler on the Roof' and International Acclaim
In 1969, Topol's career reached new heights with his portrayal of Tevye the milkman in the iconic stage musical "Fiddler on the Roof." He reprised this role in the 1971 American film adaptation, earning another Golden Globe and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. This performance launched his international career, leading to notable roles in films such as "Follow Me!" (1972), "Flash Gordon" (1980), and "For Your Eyes Only" (1981).
