Early Life and Education
Charles Ancillon was born on July 28, 1653, in Metz, France, to a respected Huguenot family. His father, David Ancillon, was also a distinguished jurist and diplomat who later relocated to Berlin. Charles studied law in Marburg, Geneva, and Paris, honing his legal and diplomatic skills.
Advocacy and Huguenot Emigration
During the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, Ancillon served as an advocate for his fellow Huguenots in his hometown. However, when his efforts to restore the annulled edict proved futile, he followed his father's example and emigrated to Berlin.
Service in Berlin
In Berlin, Ancillon assumed the role of judge and director of French emigrants. His diplomatic acumen earned him the position of envoy to Switzerland, where he represented Prussian interests for several years.
Return to Berlin and Royal Service
In 1699, Ancillon returned to Berlin, where he became the king's historiographer. He also served as director of police, overseeing law enforcement and municipal affairs.
Legacy
