Biography of Charles Bruffy

Education and Achievements
Bruffy received his bachelor's degree from Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri and his master's degree in vocal performance from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He later earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a specialization in conducting from the same university. In recognition of his accomplishments, Bruffy has been awarded honorary doctorates from Baker University and Missouri Western State University.
Choral Leadership
Bruffy became the Artistic Director of the Phoenix Chorale in 1999, and since 1988, he has been leading the Kansas City Chorale. Both ensembles have received high acclaim for their live performances and recordings. Bruffy's diverse discography includes recordings of works by composers such as Dominick Argento, Johannes Brahms, John Corigliano, Alexander Gretchaninov, Frank Martin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Teaching and International Performances
As a conductor, Bruffy has conducted workshops and seminars throughout the United States, including Westminster Choir College at Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, and the National Association of Church Musicians Convention in Long Beach, California. In 2003, he led a performance of Verdi's "Messa da Requiem" at the Sydney Opera House. Bruffy has also performed as a tenor soloist with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in France and at Carnegie Hall. In 2009, he conducted both professional choirs in performances at the Arts & Cultural Center in Incheon, South Korea, the Troy Music Hall in Troy, New York, and Lincoln Center in New York City. In 2010, Bruffy was invited to conduct the Rhode Island Senior All-State Choir at Rhode Island College.
Awards and Recognition
Bruffy has received numerous awards, including the Adventurous Programming award from The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), as well as two Grammy Awards in 2007 and 2008.
